“Comments on News.Com story that Apple plans to dump IBM in favor of Intel.”

Dave discusses a rumor that Apple plans to announce at the Worldwide Developer Conference on Monday that it is ending its partnership with IBM and switching its computers to use Intel microprocessors. Dave speculates that this would be a significant announcement for developers, as it would require them to adapt their applications. He suggests this move could allow Apple to more directly compete with Microsoft in the operating system market, as Apple’s software would no longer be tied to a specific hardware platform.

Good morning, everyone. It’s Dave Winer here. It’s morning coffee notes for June 3rd, 2005 .
Just a late evening one. It’s nine a little bit after 9 o' clock Eastern time. It means a 6 p. m.
Pacific and I just wanted a short one. I want to I Still got a bunch of stuff that I want to put into a regular morning coffee notes, but this one I just had to laugh I was doing a Just reading my aggregator and came across the story of scoop and it’s a big story from news. com and the story is that Apple is plans to announce on Monday that it is scrapping its partnership with IBM and switching its computers to Intel’s microprocessors and it’s it’s funny because I Called Michael Gartenberg.
Michael is an analyst at Jupiter Research And he’s gonna be at the World wide Developer Conference on Monday and Earlier this week as he was about to leave town. He put his cell phone number into his RSS feed and So I had a few moments and I thought well, let’s call it Michael and see what he has to say And we talked for a few moments and little speculation. He said , you know, it was interesting that there was no the rumor sites had absolutely nothing about what Apple might announce at the Worldwide Developer Conference and So I said, well, what’s indul gent speculation about what might that what they might be coming out with? And we had both heard a rumor it had been actually published in the Wall Street Journal Ironically one of the publications that Jobs said he wouldn’t sue Really weird that a guy has a has the right to decide who is a journalist. It’s crazy. He doesn’t of course It’s not so another theory was that he had bought off some of the rumor sites by purchasing ads But the Wall Street Journal had had a speculative story that the IBM deal was off and they were switching to Intel microp rocessors And we walked through all the angles on it and I don’t know if Michael decided but I Decided that this had to be it that this had to be the thing that they were going to announce First of all, it’s the right thing to announce at a developer conference because the largest impact this this will have on Anyone is a developers. It’s the kind of thing that they have to signal some amount of time in advance so that the application Developers can move along and I had heard and this is something I didn’t mention to Michael that But they were doing like everything in their power to shut down to get rid of Metro works and to become the only development tool and that I also pointed out that the Mac code base to the extent that it had any machine code in it that had pretty much gotten You know washed out of the system When through the various transitions over the years probably the biggest one being the switch from 68,000 to power PC, which is the one that brought IBM in and and in the first place That pretty much got rid of all the machine code at that time All the code that was written in the assembly language of one particular machine and There was a heavy penalty for having any code that was that was really bound into machine So people generally started writing their applications in high-level languages like C or C plus plus or Or even I think some cases Java or whatever And then the switch to next step which is what Mac OS 10 is Would probably have taken out a bunch and that I pointed out that since basically They’re running next step now, and they had made that transition to Intel hardware from I Believe Motorola. I think they had a 68,000 the original next machine So they had become completely a software company. This also will fuel speculation and no doubt My guess is that Apple will probably try to squash any thought that Their software will run on the same hardware that runs Windows Although on second thought, maybe they will maybe they will I you know Probably I’m gonna take that one back and say that they that they will not squash any speculation because You know aside from whatever economics they might have had going with IBM That this allows, you know that they now get in their deal with Intel This now gets them a chance to compete with Microsoft on in the operating system market and if there is such a thing as the operating system market That Apple had a sort of protected little cul-de-sac a place where they could Where they could develop quietly in a way from any, you know competition from Microsoft Now perhaps they feel that their operating system is up to competing head-on head-to-head with Microsoft and and Michael said well, why would they want to do that? I said just one reason growth that if they wanted to grow beyond the small market share that they would have to at some point try To go head-to-head with Microsoft and and this may signal that now is the time.
They think they’re ready to do that Certainly will make for a lot of interesting conversations and that’s why when I heard that News. com feels so confident that they’re no longer in this article. They don’t hedge it.
They don’t say That that rumors are saying if they say absolutely straight out Apple will announce on Monday that it’s switching over to be Intel and Now there’s still got to be some chance that they’re sticking their neck out a little too far And it may turn out not to be true, but it sure is going to make for interesting discussions this weekend. So Anyway, I put this I’ll put this up on scripting news I will also if you want to comment on this and Then why don’t you just go to? archive Let’s see where you go archive dot scripting comm slash 2005 slash oh six slash oh three and you will see a link there to a place to comment Wherever that may be that you may put a comment in there and say Whether you think that this is a crazy idea or whether it’s just plain wrong or whether you see, you know any Any interesting any interesting side effects? But anyway, I guess that’s about it for the discussion right now. It’s like a real short morning coffee notes it’s only seven minutes and 28 seconds which Maybe sets a new record in terms of the length of a morning coffee notes So anyway, this is June 3rd 2005 Dave Winer signing off your your ever faithful reporter here. Bye
